The episode begins with the family trying to get Maggie to talk, but the baby only burps in response, which discourages Marge. Bart then asks what her first word was, but Marge changes the subject (Bart's first word was "Oh my!" after watching Homer and Marge make love). Lisa then asks what her first word was, so Marge begins to tell the story. The story begins in 1983, when the family (then composed of Homer, Marge and Bart) lived in an apartment in the suburbs of Springfield. At that time, Marge tells Homer that she is expecting another child (Lisa), so she proposes that they move house, which Homer refuses, although they are going to buy a new one anyway. Among the houses they visit, they see their current home, but Homer sees it as impossible to acquire due to its price, so he asks Grampa to sell his house (which he won on a game show, thanks to an arrangement with the director), promising him that he would take him to live with the family (although later he takes him to a nursing home).

When they finally move in, they meet Flanders and his son Rod. During the time that Marge was expecting the baby, Bart only bothered and made mischief, but Homer did not care since he only watched TV. As the story ends, Bart and Lisa begin to fight, so Homer goes to leave Maggie in her crib, but as he leaves her and leaves, Maggie says Daddy (her first word). A doubt that arises since Marge became pregnant in the spring of 1983 (March-June), but was born during the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984.

Después Bart pregunta cuál fue su primera palabra, pero Marge cambia el tema (la primera palabra de Bart fue ¡Ay Caramba!, luego de ver a Homer y Marge hacer el amor). Luego Lisa pregunta cuál fue su primera palabra, entonces Marge comienza a relatar la historia. La historia empieza en 1983, cuando la familia (compuesta en ese entonces por Homer, Marge y Bart) vivía en un apartamento en los suburbios de Springfield. En esos días Marge le dice a Homer que espera otro hijo (Lisa), por lo que le propone un cambio de casa, a lo que Homer se niega, aunque de todos modos van a comprar una nueva. Entre las casas que visitan ven la que es su actual hogar, pero Homer la ve imposible de adquirir debido a su precio, por lo que le pide al Abuelo que venda su casa (la cual ganó en un programa de concursos, gracias a un arreglo con el director), prometiéndole que lo llevaría a vivir con la familia (aunque después lo lleva a un asilo).

Cuando finalmente se mudan, conocen a Flanders y a su hijo Rod. En ese momento, Ned les dice que les prestaría todo lo que necesiten y Homer le pide la mesa que llevaba en ese instante, diciéndole que la tendrá por un tiempo (8 años y contando). Durante el tiempo en que Marge esperaba el nacimiento del bebé, Bart sólo fastidiaba y hacía travesuras, pero Homer no se preocupaba ya que sólo veía la TV. Cuando se acercaba el nacimiento de Lisa, se estaban desarrollando los JJ.OO. de 1984, en los cuales Krusty había organizado un concurso en el cual recibían un raspe, en el cual había un evento de los Juegos y si los Estados Unidos conseguían una medalla de oro, ganaban un hamburguesa gratis, aunque las tarjetas venían con eventos que los comunistas siempre ganaban. Pero hubo un boicot y los soviéticos no participaron, por lo que Krusty perdía 400 millones de dólares. Cuando el momento del nacimiento llega, dejan a Bart con los Flanders. Días más tarde, Bart conoce a Lisa y lo primero que le dice es 'Te odio'. Desde el momento en que nace Lisa, nadie toma en cuenta a Bart, por lo que él hace numerosos intentos para desaparecerla, hasta que fracasa. Cuando él planea escaparse, Lisa lo interrupe diciendo Bart repetidas veces, por lo que Bart va donde sus padres a darles la noticia. Lisa dice Mami y Ato creíble, pero cuando Homer le hace decir Papi, la bebé le dice Homer (tal y como pasó con Bart).

Cuando termina la historia, Bart y Lisa comienzan a pelear, por lo que Homer va a dejar a Maggie a su cuna, pero al dejarla e irse, Maggie dice Papi (su primera palabra). Una duda que surge al ser que Marge se embarazo en la primavera de 1983 (Marzo-Junio), pero nacio durante las olimpiadas de Los Angeles en 1984.
