Description du Make
Building and flying Michael's He-162 Volksjäger has been an enjoyable little project.
I had issues sourcing the recommended EDF options outlined in the build instructions, so I used a Powerfun 50mm EDF. The dimensions of this were slightly too large for the engine pod, which prevented me from completing the plane.
Thankfully, Michael was able to resize the EDF mount for my unit, allowing me to get my Volksjäger off the ground. My flying weight came in a little heavy at 965g, likely due to my material choice of Pre-Foamed PLA.
Flight performance:
Glide - 8/10 (Surprisingly good for such small wings)
Top Speed - 6/10 (May be hampered by my EDF, but fast enough)
Acceleration - 7/10 (Off-axis thrust can be interesting at times)
Stability - 9/10 (Flies like a much larger model)
Quirks:
- Gunports will whistle at high speed and high g turns (Neat!).
- The plane carries speed very efficiently with no throttle.
- Off-axis thrust leads to strange stall characteristics when in climbs. I preferred to turn up my elevator rates to pull past the noseover tendency.
- Flat-glued surfaces. This makes repairs easier, but makes assembly slightly harder as you have to align some segments by hand. The engine and Tail have alignment tabs.
Overall, a great little model. Easy to build, fun to fly, and certainly unique. Some features I wish were included would be the option to have full-span ailerons for the mixing of flaperons. The model carries speed so well that it would be a nice feature to help slow down, haha.
