Description du Make

I eventually got this to print but it took some doing. The tolerances on all of the pieces are extremely tight. Also, the V7 gear file contains some models which are NOT perfectly aligned with the build plate. This meant that I wasn't able to print the gears cleanly as a set without tweaking it slightly to bring all elements into alignment with the build plate. Then I could successfully put a raft under it and get it to print correctly.
Once assembled, the tolerances are so tight that the model doesn't spin easily. I'm hoping that the gears will loosen over time.
I imagine that this would be a bit easier to print if scaled up some, perhaps 150%. In fact, I'm attempting to print the "in-place" version of the file scaled up to 150% just to see if I can get it to work. I'll post an update after that finishes.
UPDATE:
I did successfully print the in-place version at 150%. Getting those gears to free up even at that scale was extremely difficult but I eventually got it working and with a drop of oil they turn reasonably well. I expect that had I printed the parts separately at this scale things would have worked out great but I wanted to see if I could pull it off this way.
UPDATE to the UPDATE:
I printed the in-place version one more time at 150% but this time I printed it tilted 45 degrees to one side and at 0.12mm under the theory that having the gaps between the gear surfaces angled might make it easier to free the gears up since I know my printer can print overhangs at 45 degrees just fine. It was still very hard to free the gears for the first time (a wide pair of pliers carefully applied to the large gears does wonders to get things started) but once they were freed, the whole thing moves far better than any of my other attempts. I'm pretty convinced that this is the way to go.
This will probably be it for me with this model. It's a fun model but think I've learned what I can from this one.
