DOUBLE-SIDED COIN PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS
🖨️ Settings & Manufacturing Guide
Note for License Plate-Style Prints:
For smoother edges, lightly sand the rounded corners after printing.
Printer Compatibility
Any FFF/FDM printer with at least a 40 × 40 × 5 mm build volume.
Nozzle & Bed
Nozzle Diameter: 0.4 mm (or 0.25 mm for ultra-crisp details)
Bed Surface: Glass, PEI, or BuildTak with glue stick or blue painter’s tape
Filament Recommendations
PLA: Easiest for fine detail and clean prints
PETG: Stronger, slight gloss
ABS: Heat-resistant (requires enclosed build chamber)
Layer & Perimeter Settings
Layer Height: 0.10–0.15 mm to capture the 0.55 mm relief accurately
Perimeters (Walls): 3 shells for a rigid rim
Infill & Speeds
Infill: 10–15% (gyroid or grid) for strength without excessive material
Print Speed: 30–50 mm/s (slower for sharper relief)
Temperature Guide
Material Nozzle °C Bed °C Notes
PLA 200–205 55 Fine detail, easy printability
PETG 235–240 70–75 Tougher, glossier surface
ABS 240–250 90–100 (encl.) Heat-resistant; enclosure req.
🛠️ Orientation & s (Double-Sided Printing)
Obverse (Side A):
Place relief-side up on the build plate.
s: Not needed for flat field coins.
Reverse (Side B):
After Side A completes, flip the coin so Side B faces down.
In your slicer:
Enable "Build Plate Only" s.
Add custom s under:
The outer 1.5 mm rim (to the thin lip)
Any high-relief elements > 0.5 mm
Tip: Use flat-roof interface layers for easy removal without damaging the design.
Two-Step Printing:
Option 1: Use a slicer pause-at-height script (pause at coin thickness) to flip the model mid-print.
Option 2: Print two separate halves and glue them back-to-back.
📏 Scaling Guidelines
This model is designed at:
Diameter: 38.15 mm
Thickness: 3.05 mm
Relief Height: 0.55 mm
By default, uniformly scaling (X/Y/Z together) will proportionally increase all dimensions, including relief depth.
For example:
200% scale → 76.3 mm diameter, 6.1 mm thickness, 1.1 mm relief
✅ To adjust relief height independently, unlock Z-scaling in your slicer and adjust the Z-axis only.
For instance:
100% X/Y, 150% Z → 0.825 mm relief
Always preview your sliced model before printing to ensure desired results.
🎨 Post-Processing
Removal:
Gently remove under-rim s with flush cutters.
Sanding:
Lightly sand only the underside rim/ interface with 400-grit paper.
Leave the relief surfaces untouched for crisp detail.
Finishing:
Apply a thin coat of primer or filler-primer to enhance detail.
Optional: Add metal leaf or metallic spray paint for a realistic coin finish.
🏁 Pro Results
This workflow ensures:
✅ Both sides align perfectly
✅ Undercut features are well-ed
